First tuna trip of season. 140 pounder caught

Billy Rogerson and his first tuna

On Sunday I made my first trip out to the bank this year for tuna. 15 minutes after putting our lines in the water, both reels went off.  One fish missed the hook and the other we hooked. After a long first run, the fish weakened and we got the tuna to the boat in about 30 minutes. The fish was 62in long and weighed 140lbs. With one fish in the boat we put the lines back in the water to try for another.  We went through a pod of tuna busting on the surface but none took the bait. The tuna bite was hot from  6:15 until about 8:30 am.

I recieved a little text this morning from one of my buddys that was out for tuna today. He said the tuna are big and plentiful. They were busting on the surface from 6am until 8am, right when the sun came up. There was a 78in fish caught right next to his boat. Seemed like no fish out there was under 60 inches. I’ll be heading out this weekened.

The striper fishing is still pretty good right now. Seems like there are alot of smaller ones around again. The big ones that were around the last few weeks seemed to move out, but they will be back real soon. There are still a few around but not as many.

Mackerel is on and off. One day there is none, the next day they are everywhere. Pogies are in the bay but not to thick yet.
